It’s About to Get Heavy

For a few years, some of my friends and I have been sharing music to listen to while we work. We’re supposed to review/rate what gets shared with us then share those reviews with the group, but that doesn’t always happen.

The Struts – Everybody Wants (2014 2016)

This week Tim shared The Struts’ Everybody Wants … which I shared last June. And that’s okay. They really rock, and I’ll take whatever excuse to listen to them.

When they re-released this album in 2016, they changed the tracks. And then in 2017, there was a Japanese edition with a few bonus tracks. I have all of the tracks from the different versions, so on my computer it’s all one album. If there are song titles you don’t recognize because you have one version of the album or the other, I really recommend hunting down the other tracks on this album.

If We Listen to the Voices that were Silent for So Long

This week, I’m sharing some music from some current coworkers. Last week was employee appreciation week and (almost) all employees at my company (about 35,000 of us) got some Bluetooth headphones. Our CEO posted a five song playlist on his blog of things he’s been listening to and encouraged everyone else to do the same:

Last week, we just listened to one album (because we tried doing this as a podcast). But for that week, we each suggested something and as a group decided what we were going to listen to. That left some albums un-heard. So I decided to take up Spencer’s suggestion as something to listen to this week.

Panic! at the Disco – Pretty. Odd. (2008)

Panic! at the Disco is a band that has been at the edge of my radar for longer than I’d care to admit. I have played in two different bands who, before I joined, opened for Panic when they were still just a hot local band in Vegas and recommended them to me – I even met them once. And I have a friend who when to school with Brendon Urie and would tell me to check out Panic when they were just starting to make a name for themselves.

But I never did until now. Maybe it’s because the vocals just seem kind of generic pop punk rock. Maybe because they were getting popular I didn’t want to seem like I was just jumping on the latest bandwagon.

The Young Veins – Take a Vacation! (2010)

This is a Panic! at the Disco off-shoot. These guys wanted to have more retro rock material while the rest of Panic wanted to have more dance-oriented music. Of the two, I like this retro rock more. It sounds very ’60s despite being released 40 years later. But they’ve had less success. They just released this one album, decided they’d done all they set out to do and went on indefinite hiatus. A no-hit wonder perhaps, but the album is good.

Its Better than I Ever Knew

Some of my co-workers and I started sharing some of our favorite music. We’ve been doing it for a while, but now we’re actually reviewing them and sharing those reviews with one another.

This week it wasn’t an album. It was a mix of 10 songs from our senior year of high school. For some of us these would have been literal mixtapes. My list has songs which were big the summer before my senior year through graduation. And they are songs I liked at the time. For other people they might be older songs which they liked while they were in high school (if I would have done that, The Beatles would have made the list)(spoiler: The Beatles weren’t on my list). For others, they might be songs which were popular, but they didn’t like them until later. Whatever.

I’m pretty sure this post has more tags than any other I’ve ever written.
