Do You Think This Aching Could be Love?

For a couple of years, some of my friends and I have been sharing music with one another. We’re supposed to review/rate whatever’s shared with us, but that doesn’t always happen.

Genesis – Invisible Touch (1986)

I hadn’t really listened to any Genesis (or Phil Collins) aside from what I’ve heard on the radio (like Tonight, Tonight, Tonight), so I was kind of excited to listen to this. Continue reading

It’s an Easy Thing to Do

For almost a year now, some of my friends and I have been sharing an album with one another, partly for exposure to new music and partly to give us something to listen to while we work, etc. We’re supposed to review it, rate it, and share those reviews/ratings with one another as well, but that doesn’t always happen.

The Funky 16 Corners (2001)

For the first time since my friends and I have been sharing music, we have a compilation album. Apparently Spencer showed this album to me 10 years ago, but I don’t remember that. But this isn’t your typical compilation. These guys weren’t even one-hit wonders. They were nobodys. These tunes are from the ’60s or ’70s. This album pays homage to forgotten American funk.

Its Better than I Ever Knew

Some of my co-workers and I started sharing some of our favorite music. We’ve been doing it for a while, but now we’re actually reviewing them and sharing those reviews with one another.

This week it wasn’t an album. It was a mix of 10 songs from our senior year of high school. For some of us these would have been literal mixtapes. My list has songs which were big the summer before my senior year through graduation. And they are songs I liked at the time. For other people they might be older songs which they liked while they were in high school (if I would have done that, The Beatles would have made the list)(spoiler: The Beatles weren’t on my list). For others, they might be songs which were popular, but they didn’t like them until later. Whatever.

I’m pretty sure this post has more tags than any other I’ve ever written.

Tim’s mix (1996-1997)

“While I did graduate in 1996, my graduating class was 1997, so I am pulling from music all the way to ’97. This includes songs popular then, and songs recorded around then, or songs I just liked and listened to a lot. I thought it would be fun to arrange them in album style, by where I think the best listening order is. So, while the same artist might be listed multiple times, I think it is more enjoyable to listen to in the order below:”

You’re Moving into My Heart and into My Soul

Some of my co-workers and I started sharing some of our favorite music. We’ve been doing it for a while, but now we’re actually reviewing them and sharing those reviews with one another. Here are the two albums that were suggested to me this week.

A note on how I rate things. One star means I don’t think it qualifies as music. Five stars mean I wish I wrote the thing. Most music for me is a three.

Roxette – Look Sharp! (1988)

This is a band I am unfamiliar with, and everyone in the office (or at least everyone who decided to weigh in on the matter) was shocked I hadn’t heard of them. Especially vocal was the girl born in 1990 and jumps at the chance to talk about how she knows about things from the ’80s. They all said, “Oh, you know The Look. You’ll listen to it and recognize it immediately.” Continue reading

Something More than Life

Some of my co-workers and I started sharing some of our favorite music. We’ve been doing it for a while, but now we’re actually reviewing them and sharing those reviews with one another. So here are the four albums that were suggested to me this week.

A note on how I rate things. One star means I don’t think it qualifies as music. Five stars means I wish I wrote the thing. Most music for me is a three.

Bruce Springsteen – Tunnel of Love (1987)

This is something I would never buy. I probably wouldn’t skip past most of the songs if they came on in a mix, but it was just OK. There were some good songs and there were some bad ones. All in all, though, this album just didn’t engage me. Probably my least favorite of these four. 2/5
